On Sunday, June 11, Hafiz Zia Ahmad, Deputy Spokesperson for the Taliban Foreign Ministry, tweeted that the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran has released 100 Afghanistani prisoners.
These detainees entered Afghanistan via Abrisham port of Nimroz province and were reunited with their relatives.
Iran released this number of captives after the Taliban group opened the Harirud River to Iran a few days ago, allowing Iran to benefit from their water rights.
One possible explanation for the release of Afghanistani prisoners might be the issue of Iran’s water rights.
