78 people were killed after a fishing boat capsized off the coast of Greece following a severe storm, according to Agence France-Presse
(Wednesday, June 14), the Greek Coast Guard announced that 78 migrants died in this boat that sank near the Peloponnese. There is a lot of worry about the potential increase in the death toll.
The Greek Coast Guard has said that they managed to save only 100 lives during a very difficult operation at the height of the storm and wind. The boat capsized in international Ionian waters. According to the information the Greek Coast Guard provided to the French news agency, there may have been hundreds of passengers on this boat.
The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the Greek government worry that many more people may have disappeared after the boat was sunk. According to initial estimates, there were 400 people in this boat; however, the Greek authorities claimed that based on the testimony of the survivors, there may have been up to 750 people on board.
