In accordance with reports from local sources, on Monday, May 29, Mohammad Nasir Moien, a professor at Herat University, was forced to resign because of shaving his beard.
Sources stated that the department for the promotion of virtue and the prevention of Vice of the Taliban in Herat warned Mr. Moien in an official meeting that he does not have the right to shave his beard.
Sources added that Mr. Moien signed his resignation and left the university in the same meeting.
Based on the sources, Mr. Moien considered this behaviour of the Taliban as a direct insult to him and said that under no law it is acceptable to insult a professor. Since the Taliban came to power, dozens of professors have been arrested, imprisoned and tortured under various pretexts.
