The Council of Shia Scholars has said in a statement published on July 18 that we do not accept the restrictions imposed by the Taliban for the Muharram ceremony and we want the Taliban to reconsider.
The Shia Scholars Council has written in this announcement that by not accepting the restrictions, a commission was appointed by this council to discuss them with Taliban officials. However, the Taliban officials, in a meeting with this commission, emphasised their previous position, which is the implementation of restrictions.
The council further said that reports of restrictions are being heard from some cities and provinces. We request that the authorities of the Taliban allow people to hold their ceremony like in previous years.
In a recent order, the Taliban said that it is forbidden to perform ceremonies in public places and that they do not have the right to establish water booths.
The Taliban officials cited security threats as the reason for this.
