According to sources in Kandahar, the Taliban has ordered that the Shia of Kandahar only commemorate the Muharram ceremony in one mosque.
Sources added that there are around 45 Shia mosques in Kandahar that commemorate the Muharram ceremony every year. However, the Taliban have now ordered that it be held solely in the Fatima Mosque in this city.
The Taliban have instructed Shiites in the new order that they do not have the authority to organise the Muharram celebration on the streets, set up drinking fountains, or hoist flags.
The Shiite Ulema Council responded yesterday to the Taliban’s restrictions on the Muharram ceremony, saying that they are unacceptable and that the Taliban should reconsider their decision.
